Munising Memorial Hospital has been awarded the 2024 Performance Leadership Award for Excellence in Quality by the Chartis Center for Rural Health. The award recognizes hospitals that perform in the top 25th percentile for quality, outcomes and/or patient perspective among rural hospitals.

Loren Graham, Alger County’s northernmost resident for over five decades, passed away in Boston on Dec. 15 at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Pat) Albjerg Graham, and their daughter, Meg Graham Peterson.
The Munising wrestling team capped off its regular season last Saturday, hosting the Mid-Peninsula Conference individual tournament. One Mustang finished on the podium in the event.

Students in Munising High School’s poetry class featured their best work during an exam show on Jan. 16 and 17 at the Munising School Public Library. More than 50 people — students, parents, administrators and community members — attended the showcase.

Winter is in full swing in Alger County, and it’s safe to say Mother Nature has chosen Munising as the ultimate destination for all things winter. While we’re thrilled to see the trails bustling with enthusiastic skiers, snowshoers and snow bikers, we’re also mindful of how much the local economy relies on that perfect snow.

Friday’s home game with Ishpeming was looked at as one of the Munising boys basketball team’s biggest tests of the regular season. The Mustangs were able to outlast the Hematites, passing that test with a 57-49 victory.
100 Years Ago: January 1925 In January 1925, Munising residents enjoyed a cultural highlight with the screening of Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama “Anna Christie” at the local Delft theater. Starring Blanche Sweet and William Russell, the play-turned-film was advertised as a gripping tale of realism and emotional power. Another feature this week was “Riders of the Timberland,” starring Rin Tin Tin, the “Wonder Dog,” in a romantic and adventurous drama that thrilled local audiences.
Munising residents and allies gathered on Jan. 18 for the People’s March, a local effort to advocate for a range of progressive causes. Organized by Joan Potter-Sommer with support from the Alger County Action group, the event reflected a nationwide movement focused on coalition building and grassroots activism.
Considering Paradise has a court that plays a bit smaller than regulation, things tend to get interesting for opponents. The Munising Baptist boys basketball team would probably agree with that after Friday, when they played on the Rockets’ home court and escaped the Northern Lights League game with a 59-54 overtime victory.
