The Munising Mustangs hosted the annual El Harger cross country meet at Pictured Rocks Golf Club on Tuesday, September 24. A record 23 teams attended the event not only to race, but also to preview the course before the UP Finals in two weeks. Under perfect running conditions, the Mustangs fielded a scoring boys team, but only two individuals on the girls side. The boys had mixed results with their eighth place team finish. Trevor Nolan ran a gritty race, with bib in hand, on his way to a third place finish out of 124 runners in a time of 17 minutes 30.9 seconds. Nolan Dolaskie claimed the second position on the team with a 55th place finish in 20:25.7. He was followed by Blake Lakosky (58th, 20:38.2). The usual number one runner for the team, Danny Goss, suffered a cramp in his hip which hampered his performance. He placed 60th in 20:46.5. Dylan Adkinson was next in 75th place in 21:53.7, and Nate Petersen rounded out the six-man team in 87th place in 22:31.4. For the girls, Kate Mattson finished in 39th place covering the 3.1 mile course in 24:33.0, and Elizabeth Wing was 81st with a time of 20:00.9.

On Wednesday, September 25, 2024, Robert “Bob” Belfry passed peacefully in his home after a lengthy battle with his health. Born and raised in Munising to Juanita “Kinky” Werner, Bob had an adventurous heart that led him to hitch-hike across the country. He got into all kinds of mischief while working in San Francisco, Oklahoma, Chicago, and anywhere else he decided to settle. And while many of these tales are too fun to include here, Bob’s friends and family know that he enjoyed everything life had to offer during that time. No matter how far he roamed, Munising was always Bob’s home, and he later returned and eventually welcomed his beloved daughter Danielle into the world. While back in his hometown, Bob worked at the Alger Correctional Facility for nearing twenty years, where he made friends with everyone from his fellow corrections officers to the inmates. In addition to being a devoted son and father, Bob was an avid music fan and collector who had amassed thousands of CDs over the years, a passion he shared with his daughter. He also enjoyed working with his hands, whether that was building something or creating all mediums of art. Though he would hate the term, Bob truly was a renaissance man who excelled at anything he put his mind to. His close friends and family knew him for his mischievous spirit, outrageous tales, and generosity.
