
The Superior Central football team opened up their new season on Wednesday, August 28, playing at Munising’s junior varsity team. The Cougars, who will play a JV schedule this fall, were able to use a strong defensive performance to propel them to an 18-8 victory.

When Deputy Madison Johnson accepted the job as Alger County sheriff deputy nearly a year ago, she expected some fanfare from the local community - maybe a Facebook post congratulating her with a smattering of positive comments - but surely not the open-arms acceptance she receives daily by strangers, who would say they know the deputy on a first-name basis.

Local residents Marissa Ackerman Graves and her husband Mike Graves, from Munising, and Elisha Cripe and her husband Scott Cripe, from Au Train, made the approximate 120mile trip to St. Ignace on Labor Day to participate in the 2024 Mackinac Bridge Walk. They were among an estimated 30,000 people who took part in the event, which included a special appearance by Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II whose participation in the event demonstrates its significance as a unifying experience for Michiganders.
They’ll be a bit light in numbers, but second year head coach Nick Paul is hoping his Grand Marais soccer team can still have a good time this season. “They had fun last year, and that is what I want them to do again,” he said.
It was a loss. However, considering their opponent and considering they were playing in an overly hot gymnasium, Munising volleyball head coach Josh Cole wasn’t too disappointed after the Lady Mustangs came up short to visiting Manistique on Tuesday, August 27.

Playing over at Ironwood in their football season opener on Thursday, August 29, Munising found themselves down after the first quarter. They found themselves behind after the second quarter as well. The Mustangs were able to dominate the second half however, and they ended up with a rather convincing 48-14 non-conference victory.

On Monday night, the Munising Middle/High School gym buzzed with excitement as a full house of community members gathered for the annual ‘Meet the Team’ event. This tradition marked the official kickoff to the fall sports season, bringing athletes, coaches, parents, and supporters together to connect before the busy season begins.

Under a bright sun, blue skies, and cool temperatures, the annual Larissa A. Vartti Cross Country Invitational was held on August 20 at the Valley Spur course in Munising. Eleven teams toed the line on the hilly, tree-covered trail. Under perfect running conditions, the home team fared very well in this inaugural meet of the season. Leading the way for the Mustang boys and capturing first place was Danny Goss, who covered the 5k course in a time of 16 minutes and 58 seconds. Following Danny was Trevor Nolan in second place with a time of 17:54. Rounding out the top seven were Blake Lakosky (12th, 20:13), Nolan Dolaskie (18th, 21:33), Zach Lindquist (19th, 21:16), Dylan Adkinson (23rd, 21:33), and Nate Petersen (30th, 23:38). With a team score of 52 points, the Mustangs came home with the firstplace trophy, distancing second place Engadine with 89 points. The girls ran a bit short-handed, but came through with a fine finish. The trio of Dayne Behning (10th, 25:23), Kate Mattson (11th, 25:24), and Olivia Cotey (12th, 25:24) successfully ran as a pack. Elizabeth Wing (30th, 36:00) rounded out the four-member team. For their efforts and using modified scoring, they finished in third place with 98 points, just 9 points away from the first-place team, Stephenson, and two points from the second-place team, North Central.
