On Friday, August 2, State Representative Jenn Hill (D-Marquette) presented Munising Memorial Hospital with a check for $2 million dollars. This money was allocated in the state budget passed in June for the 2025 fiscal year. It will allow the hospital to do in a year what would have taken a decade through regular funding. The community hospital is an independent, non-profit, rural health care facility which provides Alger County with inpatient, outpatient and emergency services. Munising Memorial will use the funds for renovations and upgrades, including purchasing new lab and imaging equipment. Jim Parker, hospital CEO, praises the amazing team, from the board to employees, for their commitment to providing care. He encourages community members who haven’t been to the hospital recently to stop by to take a look around at the great things that are happening.

Now and again, I am asked for my opinion about “radical environmentalists,” which is a legitimate question to put to any forester. However, it is often a loaded question with an air of conflict already built in, presented almost as a challenge.

Kiwanis of Alger County was formed in 1990 by a group of like-minded community members. Their mission was to improve the world one child and one community at a time. Today, some of the members have changed but the mission is still the same. This club is a member of the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Kiwanis District.

On August 1, the Munising Lions staffed a hydration station for the Tour Da Yoop, Eh bikers providing water, ice, and food on a hot muggy day. Thirty-seven bikers as well as their support and gear crews came through the Munising area and stopped at the Bear Trap Restaurant for a quick break before completing that day’s journey from Marquette to Grand Marais. The Lions visited with the bikers and crew from around the country as they rehydrated and replenished their energy reserves to complete the last 40 miles of the day.

Nick Bogater’s back porch, an unlikely shipyard, became a canvas for his dreams amidst the chaos of raising two young daughters with his wife, Johanna, working full-time as a Wastewater Treatment Operator, and managing the everyday responsibilities of homeownership. While replacing the front porch of his home, Nick realized that his back porch could be transformed into the perfect workshop if rebuilt to accommodate his vision—a not-yet-built boat.
