Nick Bogater’s back porch, an unlikely shipyard, became a canvas for his dreams amidst the chaos of raising two young daughters with his wife, Johanna, working full-time as a Wastewater Treatment Operator, and managing the everyday responsibilities of homeownership. While replacing the front porch of his home, Nick realized that his back porch could be transformed into the perfect workshop if rebuilt to accommodate his vision—a not-yet-built boat.

DNR urges ‘safety first’ approach to time on the water

Summer is in full swing, and the water is the place to be! Though there are many ways to enjoy Michigan’s waterways – swimming, fishing, paddling, boating and more – the Michigan Department of Natural Resources wants to ensure that your first priority is safety in and around the water.

Deer hunting regulation changes: What you need to know for 2024

On July 11, 2024, the Michigan Natural Resources Commission approved the scheduled deer hunting regulations for this fall. The full package of regulations includes updates that won’t begin until after the 2024 seasons have ended; those updates will be explained at a later date. The commissioners and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources thank everyone who gave their time, insight and feedback to the work of the DNR’s Deer Management Initiative, which contributed to many of these regulation changes and decisions.

Get safety-certified during Hunter Safety Education Week

Fall hunting is right around the corner, but you can get safety-certified now during the DNR’s Hunter Safety Education Week, Aug. 12-18. More than 60 in-person classes and/ or field days are being offered in 40 counties throughout the state as additional opportunities to obtain your hunter safety education certificate.

Valley Spur trail system receives grant

Valley Spur, a much-loved trail system in Alger County, is getting a much-needed shot in the arm. The trails, which are a frequent visit for ski, snowshoe and mountain bike enthusiasts, recently received a $99,950 USDA Rural Development Small Business Grant.
