“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others (Matthew 6:5) It is not uncommon during Thanksgiving for someone to offer a prayer. Usually, it is the most religious person in the family. Those who are not particularly religious brace themselves for what comes next. They pray (ironically) that the prayer won’t turn into a sermon because the sermon is directed at them. Who wants someone to preach at them? The prayer is not so much a prayer but a mini-sermon disguised as a prayer.
Q: I’ve been having intermittent pain on the outer hip area and along the thigh for several weeks, worse when I’m walking up even a gradual slope or on a level surface. I was telling a friend about it and he suggested I buy a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) unit, which can be obtained without a prescription. It arrived in the mail a few days ago, but the instructions that came with it are very brief and not very useful. Can you help me use it correctly?
“The Get Away Drop In Center”, located at 226 West Superior Street in Munising, is a nonprofit organization that is committed to providing an atmosphere of acceptance where individuals feel needed and grow in self-worth, dignity and self-respect through social and recreational activities, peer support, community resources and promoting self-advocacy. Our vision is to welcome people with past or present mental health issues to a safe, supportive environment and break the stigma on mental health in our community.
For the last 19 years, on the last Friday of July, the Vietnam Veterans of Alger County Chapter 237, along with the American Legion and the Munising City Band, have served up a fish fry lunch for the veterans of Michigan Veterans Home D.J. Jacobetti in Marquette. Each year, an anonymous donor purchases fish from Vanlandschoot and Sons Fishery. Altran donates a bus to transport some of the volunteers each year, and the driver, Don Wyatt, also donates his time to drive the bus. Next year will mark the Fish Fry’s 20th year! The event is a summer favorite for Jacobetti veterans, loved ones, and staff that the volunteers and sponsors also look forward to each year.
Fall hunting is right around the corner, but you can get safety-certified now during the DNR’s Hunter Safety Education Week, Aug. 12-18. More than 60 in-person classes and/ or field days are being offered in 40 counties throughout the state as additional opportunities to obtain your hunter safety education certificate.

Valley Spur, a much-loved trail system in Alger County, is getting a much-needed shot in the arm. The trails, which are a frequent visit for ski, snowshoe and mountain bike enthusiasts, recently received a $99,950 USDA Rural Development Small Business Grant.
