
Watching birds continues to be one of the favorite activities in the United States. For whatever set of reasons, humans are fascinated by our flying fauna. For some folks, the interest dives deeper than the casual “oh my.”

The Upper Peninsula has a rich history with and connection to trees, from its earliest days when forests were a vital resource, to the 19th century when logging began driving economic growth, to today’s sustainable forestry practices and recreation, with a goal of preservation for the future. From timber harvesting to maple syrup production and the pulp and paper industry, trees remain integral to the Upper Peninsula’s economy, culture, and environmental stewardship efforts.
Loonapalooza 2024, hosted by the Friends of Seney National Wildlife Refuge, takes place on August 9th at the Erickson Center for the Arts in Curtis, MI. This event celebrates Common Loons and migratory birds with an afternoon symposium featuring expert lectures on bird research and conservation. The festivities continue with a celebration that includes a photo booth, loon calling contest, live and silent auctions, and local treats such as specially brewed beer, wine, spirits, and appetizers from Upper Crust Deli.
The Hiawatha National Forest will host Open Houses at each Ranger District Office throughout July. Forest Supervisor Shannon Rische invites the public, businesses, organizations, and partners to attend these events. Guests will meet new staff, learn about forest happenings, and engage with employees.

Earlier this June, Mathers Elementary hosted Camp 911, a state recognized youth camp with the aim to stoke interest in law enforcement, criminal justice, and first responder career paths.
Rodger Clarence Swanson, most recently of Munising, died on Friday, May 24, 2024, following a fall. Services will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 in Munising. Visiting time with family and friends will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home. Chester “Chet” Brown, Jr., age 63, of Munising, died Thursday, June 20, 2024 at Medilodge of Munising. Private family services are being planned for a later date.
