Birdwatching is a favorite pastime of many people. It’s also helpful for research purposes if those birders are reporting which birds they’re seeing on eBird.org. Thanks to these kinds of reports, scientists have been able to follow the population trends of birds since the 1970’s. Unfortunately, the trends are not good. In 2019, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and other partners published a report in the journal Science that documents the decline of bird populations in North America.
On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) executed a federal search warrant in the residential area of Munising. In response to an email inquiry from The Munising Beacon, a spokesperson from the FBI’s Detroit Field Office confirmed, “The FBI executed a federal search warrant near the Varnum Road location last week.” When asked if the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church was also included in the search warrant, the spokesperson added, “There was law enforcement activity near the second location, but I cannot confirm if it was related to the search warrant.

Three climate monitoring and maritime safety buoys have been deployed for the season from the south shore of Lake Superior. The Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) staff deployed the buoys with boat support provided by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (NPS).

Pictured Rock Days is the first weekend of June with cruises free to Upper Peninsula residents and plenty of activities for everyone. This year’s Pictured Rock Days event was held June 8 and 9 at the Munising Binsfeld Bayshore and Bayshore Marina.
Gregory Russell Quinn, age 67, of Deerton, passed peacefully under the loving care of North Woods Home Hospice and with his family by his side on June 6, 2024 after a two year battle with cancer. Visitation will be on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising from 10:00 a.m.

Preventing new invasive species from entering Michigan is the first goal in Michigan’s aquatic invasive species management plan, but prevention efforts are not perfect, and some invaders still make it into the state. Finding new invasions early improves chances of slowing their spread or possibly eradicating the population.
