Gregory Russell Quinn, age 67, of Deerton, passed peacefully under the loving care of North Woods Home Hospice and with his family by his side on June 6, 2024 after a two year battle with cancer. Visitation will be on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising from 10:00 a.m.

Isle Royale, MI - On the morning of June 8th, a potentially disastrous incident on Lake Superior was averted thanks to swift action by the United States Coast Guard and partner agencies. The 689-foot bulk carrier, M/V Michipicoten, began taking on water near Isle Royale, triggering an emergency response that ultimately led to the vessel’s safe mooring in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The Munising Bay Quilt Guild is holding a free quilt camp from Monday, June 24, to Wednesday, June 26, noon to 4:00 PM each day, at the Munising Baptist Church and School in Wetmore. It is open to anyone aged 8 and older who would like to do a small quilt project. Our project this year is a freeform pieced tote bag, the Frankenbag. All materials are furnished. The importance of family cannot be overstated by diocesan seminarian, Zack Mazurek, ahead of his diaconate ordination this May. Reflecting on his journey up to this point as he prepares for his ordination to the diaconate, Mazurek said, “looking back, I think it’s such a blessing that the Lord was able to work so powerfully in my life through our family, helping me to fall in love with Him and with the Church.”

“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars” is a quote and a campaign slogan that represents Savannah Lassila. Lassila will be part of an elite group from Michigan who will attend the Conference on National Affairs (CONA) this summer from June 25 through July 5, 2024. Only 25 total students from Michigan are selected to attend the conference which involves at least 40 states. Lassila also ran for the position of youth governor and was the lieutenant governor this school year. The CONA experience is 10 days long and covers national issues in decision- making, whereas the Michigan Youth in Government conference is about five days and deals primarily with state issues.

The Munising track and field teams traveled to Kingsford on Saturday, to take part in the Division 2 UP finals meet. The Mustang boys had an impressive second place showing, while the girls had some good moments as well, finishing seventh.

HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response (HOPE AACR) recently conducted an extensive 3-day training workshop from May 1719, 2024. This event brought together eight dog/handler teams and one team leader from across the Midwest, including two teams from the Upper Peninsula, thanks to a generous donation from the Superior Health Foundation.

Summertime Fitness The Deep Blue Fitness Summer Training Program is intended for both athletes and non-athletes to improve overall physical fitness, both sports-related and in general. The program is for students in grades 6-12, and includes elements of strength-building, endurance, agility, overall functional fitness, and sports performance. The program runs from June 11 through August 29 at Munising High School. Students can sign-up for the whole summer, or on a month-to-month basis.
