Staying Bear Aware on Grand Island

With summer approaching, visitors are heading to Grand Island National Recreation Area, a popular destination for campers and day-trippers alike. Ferry service began last Friday, May 24. The Island is known for its breathtaking overlooks, pristine beaches, deep hardwoods, and fascinating cultural sites. It offers numerous recreation opportunities including campsites, day sites, hiking and biking trails, beaches, and rental cabins.

Hiker’s body recovered from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Munising, MICHIGAN — On the evening of Wednesday, May 29th, recovery efforts were completed near the Coves Campground for the body of a 45-year-old male. United States Park Rangers at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore received a call that the individual had fallen unconscious after exhibiting signs of distress while hiking towards Spray Falls. Alger County Sheriff’s Office deployed a marine response vessel to the area while additional personnel responded on foot. The individual, identified as Steven Poppema of Holland, Michigan, was pronounced dead at the scene.

As forests age, increases in natural mortality and subsequent disturbance events happen. Michigan forests are growing older and natural mortality is, indeed, on the rise. For the past several years, natural mortality volumes have exceeded harvest volumes.

Munising golf wraps up season at UP finals

The Munising golf team put the finishing touches on their season on Wednesday, May 29. The Mustangs were taking part in the Division 2 UP Finals meet, held at Young’s Golf Course in Iron River. Munising had both their boys’ and girls’ teams finish in fifth place.

Superior Central softball drops district title game to Ishpeming

For as good of a season as the Superior Central softball team had, there just wasn’t a way to get around Ishpeming and their ace pitcher Payton Manninen. The Lady Cougars took on the Lady Hematites in a Division 4 district championship game in Munising on Friday, and were only able to get one hit in what was a 15-0 season ending loss in five innings.

Summertime Fitness The Deep Blue Fitness Summer Training Program is intended for both athletes and non-athletes to improve overall physical fitness, both sports-related and in general. The program is for students in grades 6-12, and includes elements of strength-building, endurance, agility, overall functional fitness, and sports performance. The program runs from June 11 through August 29 at Munising High School. Students can sign-up for the whole summer, or on a month-to-month basis.
