State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks announced Tuesday, Nov. 29 an opportunity for Michiganders to serve their communities through the 2023 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

It was a busy but successful holiday week for the Manistique Emeralds Varsity Hockey Co-op. The Emeralds picked up their first win of the season by beating the Cheboygan Chiefs 7-2 in St. Ignace last Tuesday. The Emeralds brought that momentum below the bridge, competing at the “Thanksgiving Showcase” in Adrian and Jackson. Taking on the two host teams, the Emeralds came home with a win and a draw in their first big weekend of the season.

The Munising Mustangs held their winter sports Meet the Teams night on Wednesday, Nov. 30. The event was a chance for parents, coaches and student-athletes to get on the same page with expectations, financial requirements, sign up for concessions duties and get excited about the new season.
The Negaunee Miners Football team got a booster shot of U.P. Power on their way through Munising on Thursday, Nov. 24. The team got a full first responder escort with roughly 75 people spread along M28 to support the only U.P. team to make Ford Field and the finals this year. Munising School Board member and Northern Michigan University hockey superfan Greg Pond also gave the team the famous kazoo serenade before the Miners headed on their way in a performance usually reserved for the Wildcats hockey team.

When Negaunee senior Phil Nelson returned the opening kickoff of the second half Friday and tied the Division 6 championship game at 14, it woke something up inside Ford Field. Unfortunately for Negaunee, that something was Timmy Kloska.
Alger Reads, the library book club will not meet in December, but are already looking ahead to the January book selection Wintering by Katherine May. An intimate and revelatory book, Wintering explores the ways we can care for and repair ourselves when life knocks us down. Alger Reads meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the library and all are welcome to attend.
This month at the library, story time will be the first Wednesday only. We will begin with 20 minutes of free play, then a story, singing and moving and end with more free play and open-ended crafts. Geared toward preschool, but siblings are welcome. Caregivers must attend as well.
There is zero debate on how good the 2022-23 Munising boys basketball team will be. They’re the favorites to repeat as district champions and bring back 10 varsity players from last season.

Michigan Tech Athletic Director Suzanne Sanregret announced Tuesday (Nov. 29) that Head Football Coach Steve Olson’s contract has not been renewed. Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator Dan Mettlach has been named the new Head Coach of the Huskies, effective immediately.
